Cerny: Upcoming PS4 Games Heavily Improved
Mark Cerny wasn’t very known to the public before his PlayStation 4 unveiling, back in February 2013; however, he quickly garnered a lot of attention thanks to his pivotal role of Chief Architect of PlayStation 4, and his interesting speeches and interviews leading to the console’s launch further enhanced his public image.
For a while, though, we haven’t heard anything from him. The launch title he worked on (as Director), Knack, wasn’t well received (although I personally liked it enough to wish for a sequel of some kind), although it is unclear if this had some kind of relevance to Cerny’s sudden disappearance from the center stage. Still, in the last few days Cerny resurfaced to speak at Develop Conference in Brighton, and we learned some interesting things; first of all, he said to IGN that Uncharted 4‘s E3 2014 Trailer is a hallmark of how different second and third year titles are going to be on Playstation 4, in comparison to first year games, which he reckons aren’t anywhere near fully utilizing the hardware.
I think anyone who saw Naughty Dog’s Trailer for Uncharted 4 appreciates there’s going to be a lot of difference between the second and third year titles and first year titles. Yeah. I’ve been looking at this from a sheer numeric perspective so I went and did a post-mortem on Knack and another title or two. You can look at the individual components and how hard they’re working and we’re nowhere near 100 percent utilisation of what’s in there right now .
For those of you who are still hoping in a Knack 2, he seemed at the very least interested in the possibility:
I would love to keep working with the [Knack] brand, definitely. There’s a lot unexplored there, I think anybody who played the game would tell you that!
