Star Citizen Dev: PS4 Is Powerful And Much Better To Develop For Than PS3

Our friends at DSO Gaming have just published a very interesting interview with Star Citizen dev Sean Tracy, Engine Technical Director at Cloud Imperium Games. Obviously for the most part there was technical talk on the PC version, but Tracy also commented on PlayStation 4, after being asked if he experimented on the PS4 devkit in the studio.

Never! :) I can speak a bit to the PS4 though as I’ve just come away from working with it at Crytek. My opinion on it is that it’s much better to develop for than PS3 ever was. It’s powerful and Sony has put the right tools in place for developers…tools that aren’t nearly as obscure or unintuitive as they may have been in the past.

This is definitely in line with what most other developers have been saying of PlayStation 4. Coming from a Star Citizen dev, though, it opens a little window of hope that the game might one day be ported to consoles - and indeed, in another answer Tracy reiterated that there’s a possibility for a console launch down the road, but it’s not happening anytime soon as most of the development so far has been PC specific.

It would be a massive understatement to say that Star Citizen is an ambitious title. With more than $60 million of pledges, Chris Roberts‘ latest project crushed all records for crowdfunding  as it aims to be the ultimate Sci-Fi simulator; from dogfighting to first person shooter boardings, from a persistent universe to a full fledged single player campaign, the promise is extremely high.

We’ve embedded the recent Persistent Universe and FPS module demonstrations below.
