Risen 3 - Gamescom 2014 Interview

During Gamescom 2014, we were able to exchange a few words with two of the developers from Piranha Bytes, the team which has just released Risen 3: Titan Lords thanks to the support of Deep Silver. What impressed us the most is to learn that the team is made up of twenty-five people. A small number in comparison to those to which we are accustomed to large productions. Because in spite of this fact, Risen 3: Titan Lords presents itself as one of the strongest creative efforts of the development studio that created the saga of Gothic and Risen.

Risen 3: Titan Lords is an Action-RPG that continues the story ended in Risen 2: Dark Waters. Several years have passed from the clash with the lord of the Titans, and everything seemed to be solved in the best way. But a new threat looms on the horizon: there wasn’t just one Titan Lord, after all. A hero stands as the defender of humanity against this imminent danger.

  • The main character is different from Risen2, is that correct?

Yes, that is correct. The protagonist of Risen 3: Titan Lords is a new character. As you can notice is physically different from the previous one, because in Risen 3 it describes the story of a new hero who must face the Titans.

  • Is there no chance to customize the character, just like in Risen 2?

The character changes its appearance depending on the equipment he wears. If you choose to play as Demon Hunter then adopt a dress and a precise look. If you choose to play as a mage of the guild of magicians, then the character will take another look. The mage will adopt a monocle and groomed hair. The warrior, on the other hand, wears his hair short and no monocle.

  • Is the engine the same of Risen 2?

The graphics engine is that of Risen 2, but modified. We are dedicated to improving the management of lights and shadows, we have improved textures and we tried to make all areas of the game very immersive.

Compared to Risen 2 there is also a lot more variety of environments, depending on the geographical location of the place you’re going to explore.

  • May the character hold two swords and fight with both of them?

The character can fight with two weapons, but not with two swords. As in Risen 2 you can fight with a sword in one hand and do something with the other: you can use your gun, for example, or do something else like throw a handful of sand to blind the opponent.

  • Is it possible to create a party? If so, how many characters can follow us?

While exploring the world, you will meet some characters that can follow you in the adventure. There are seven characters, all in all, which may be “recruited” but only one of these can be following you at a time. There are also NPCs that can assist you during a quest, and once completed, will return to their business.

  • Is there a dynamic weather system?

Yes, of course. And also the day/night cycle.

  • Is the physics engine “homemade”? Is physics also applied to elements? I mean, if it’s raining and I summon a fireball, does it lose effectiveness?

Yes, the physics engine is “homemade”. But we have not applied physics to elements. The effectiveness of a fireball is determined by a system of resistance to the fire element; each enemy will have a different resistance.

  • The game is available for PC Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Will there be a MAC/Linux version? What about next-gen consoles like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One?

No. It is not a choice that depends on us. Of course, we could make a version for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One but it is a decision to be made with the publisher. At the moment we are focusing on the support of the game for the current platforms: PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

  • Thank you for your time.
