Smedley: We’re Beyond Excited; Can’t Wait To Make XB1 Games

The biggest news of the day is surely the announcement that Sony Online Entertainment is no longer part of Sony Corp., having been acquired by Columbus Nova. The press release states that, effective immediately, the newly independent game development studio (now called Daybreak Game Company) will continue to focus on creating “exceptional online games, now as a multiplatform company”.

Sony Online Entertainment was mostly known for its work in the MMO genre for PC, having produced influential games like Everquest I & II, Star Wars Galaxies and Planetside.

However, being part of Sony Corp. meant that they only ever released console games for PlayStation platforms. President John Smedley mentioned on Twitter that the company is “beyond excited”, adding that he can’t wait to finally be able to make Xbox One games too; all of the recent games produced by SOE (DC Universe Online, Planetside 2, Everquest Next, H1Z1) had been engineered to work on console as well, and the first two are already available on PlayStation 4.

It’s not far fetched to expect them all on Xbox One in due time.

Finally, Smedley wanted to reassure every loyal SOE user that all of their games will still be available as they were yesterday.

What do you think of this unexpected move by Sony Corp.? Let us know in the comments!
