Far Cry 4 Map Editor Allows You To Change Gravity

Ubisoft has talked a lot about the story improvements in the upcoming installment of Far Cry, due for release in November, but not a whole lot about other important aspects of the franchise, such as multiplayer. The latest number of PC Gamer USA (which you can buy here) has the scoop on the Far Cry 4 map editor, which has long been a key feature in the series, and it sounds like there’s a lot of fun to be had.

First of all, Game Director Patrik Methe acknowledged that in Far Cry 3, finding maps created by other players was too complicated and they wanted to fix that now.

We did our best, but it was such a big game. I am not ashamed to admit, it was difficult to find maps. If you wanted to play user-created content, you almost needed a PhD in engineering or software design, or maybe even anthropology! I dunno what you’d need, but you’d need something. It was really hidden. And that is the opposite of the approach we’re taking today.

In Far Cry 4 you’ll be able to find maps just one click away from the main menu. That’s just the beginning, though; each map is a 512×512 meter plane, and there are four mission types to choose, each one with a different objective: Assault (killing all enemies), Hunt (killing all animals), Outpost (seizing control of the outpost) and Extraction (going from one point to another of the map).

You can also spawn AI-controlled enemies and their behavior can be customized as well, including whether they are on patrol duty or not. Many objects can be thrown in for good measure, such as campfires, barrels, chairs and crates (what kind of videogame would it be without barrels and/or crates, after all?), but most importantly loot.

The most exciting parts are the ability to change the map’s theme and gravity, though. As for the former, it’s possible to choose between Jungle and Himalaya, for instance, which completely changes the aesthetic vibe of the map; as for the latter, well, you can tweak gravity and pretend to be a superhero.

With all this stuff at the player’s disposal, it’s not at all strange to think that someone might pack a map with so many things that it would make the game crash. This is why the team added a a tracker that will warn you of the “performance budget” and even if there are some other possible errors.

We don’t know yet the full details of the multiplayer itself in Far Cry 4, though Ubisoft already said that it’s being done by Red Storm and it is going to be asymmetrical, and the Season Pass detailed a few days ago hints that there will be at least two playable factions, Rakshasa and Golden Path. Far Cry 4 comes out on November 18 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360.
