The Incredible Details Of Driveclub

17 September 2014
We already knew that Evolution Studios worked to great lengths in order to make Driveclub as realistic as possible, but the actual details shared today by Sony Computer Entertainment in a press release are almost mind-boggling. Just read for yourself:
- Each location has a viewing perspective which results in an horizon of over 200KM, and even the Earth’s curvature is accounted for both terrain and sky.
- It will be possible to gaze upon the Aurora Borealis in the northernmost tracks of Scotland, Canada and Norway.
- Clouds (which are all rendered in 3D, in order to ensure a realistic diffusion of sunlight) react dynamically to different wind speeds.
- Tarmac textures have been handcrafted.
- Every light source in the environment is generated independently, and with different properties. The team worked on the intensity of lighting sources such as street lights and even camera flashes; these elements will be particularly notable during night races on Indian tracks.
- Evolution Studios has spent several weeks in the game’s locations, moving for at least 200KM per day in order to learn the roads and climate of each country. Many thousands photographs and videos were taken, in all of the possible weather conditions and times of the day.
- On the Indian track of Chungara Lake, players will be able to see a storm of 19K pink flamingo birds. Other tracks will feature Scottish seagulls, Norwegian crows, Canadian gooses, and Chilean vultures; each group behaves in a particular way.
- Some animals will only appear during certain times of the day. Flies and butterflies are only visible during the day, while moths and bats only come out at night.
- There are over 100 species of trees, bushes, moss and flowers in Driveclub, with a total of 1,2 million trees displayed along the tracks.
- Evolution took over 1K photographs of each car’s inside and outside, in order to portray each material in the best possible way.
- Driveclub features an accurate car damage system. On the most exposed spots and borders of a car, multilayered scratches will appear, eventually revealing the metal or carbon materials.
- During races, dirt and sand will gradually be added to the car, slightly altering its look.
- Speedometers have been modeled for each car according to the different specifics.
- Car sounds in Driveclub are so accurate that BMW and Mercedes-Benz AMG have requested copies in order to replace the archived files they previously stored.
Driveclub will release on 7th October exclusively for PlayStation 4; a PS Plus Edition will be available for subscribers to try, they can then upgrade it with a slight discount over the full price. Driveclub will also be featured in a PlayStation 4 bundle priced at 449$/€.
