Rainbow Six Siege Will Have More Modes

Rainbow Six Siege has been one of the biggest surprises at E3 2014, with Ubisoft unveiling the game as a reboot of the failed Patriots projects. We already know that Siege has been focused from the beginning on online multiplayer and 60FPS gameplay, as stated by CEO Yves Guillemot; today, we learned a few more things in a video interview with Olivier Couture (Technical Director), published on Angry Joe’s YouTube channel.
As a long time Rainbow Six fan, I’ve been thrilled to see this comeback. However, as I tried to learn more on the game I’ve become slightly worried that with “Siege” gameplay being so important to be added in the very game’s title, Hostage Rescue could be the only multiplayer mode available. This would have been truly disappointing, as Rainbow Six always offered many modes and moreover, eventually Hostage Rescue could become monotonous. Luckily, Couture lifted my worries during the interview:
Yeah, what we’re showing at E3 is called the Hostage Rescue game mode. We are working on different game modes right now, but that’s the only mode we’re showing for now.
He also explained the design concept behind the procedural destruction added in Rainbow Six Siege: with only one life available and walls that aren’t that secure anymore, tension and paranoia just skyrocket.
I think having bullet penetration is very realistic, in real life they are very aware of that. You have this constant feeling of paranoia because you’re never 100% safe even behind walls.
It’s so tense, that’s the whole point. We want the players to feel attached to what they’re doing and having one life and a team of five people really adds a lot of tension. You know, we’ve been playing the game for a while now and that feeling of paranoia and tension is still there, so that’s the whole point of making this game.
As someone who genuinely hates games with little consequence for the player’s actions, I am truly happy that they went this way. I’ve always loved those extremely tense Rainbow Six team survival matches, because they can create some amazing memories when you manage to kill 2 or 3 people while alone and win the match; the destruction seems a perfect fit to make the game even more dynamic and tense than it was before.
Another pillar of the franchise has always been the need to communicate between team members, and it looks like the new drone will enhance this part even further. It’s not only useful for attackers when planning the attack, but it can also be exploited during the match.
You can use the drone in the preparation phase but also during the game. You can also stream the feed from other people’s drones and even when you’re dead, you can also use the drone camera to give good input to the team.
Rainbow Six Siege is slated for a generic 2015 release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
