Sony:We Might Do Without Physical Games In the Future
Speaking with VG247, Sony Computer Entertainment’s Marketing Director for UK & Ireland Fergal Gara mentioned that the company might eventually do without physical games in the future, as this is the direction taken by the market.
Compared to PS3, Vita has had a higher percentage of games bought digitally since it was first launched. More Vita games are still consumed through physical game cards than they are through digital, but things are increasingly moving the other way. Could be that in future physical games becomes the side we do without.
Now, the discussion focused mainly on PS Vita, but everyone knows that this trend is also applying to home consoles: for instance, every PlayStation 4 title is downloadable via PSN and this wasn’t the case with PlayStation 3. PlayStation 5 might very well do without physical games entirely.
Personally, I don’t see another generation of consoles using physical drives. They are almost a thing of the past for many PC gamers already (my own PC doesn’t even have a drive, other than the HDD of course), and the benefits of digital games are simply too significant to be ignored, as customers of Steam and PSN/PlayStation Plus know already. What do you think? Do you still cling to physical games or are you of the opinion that they’ll be a relic soon?
