Sony:We Might Do Without Physical Games In the Future

Speaking with VG247, Sony Computer Entertainment’s Marketing Director for UK & Ireland Fergal Gara mentioned that the company might eventually do without physical games in the future, as this is the direction taken by the market.

Compared to PS3, Vita has had a higher percentage of games bought digitally since it was first launched. More Vita games are still consumed through physical game cards than they are through digital, but things are increasingly moving the other way. Could be that in future physical games becomes the side we do without.

Now, the discussion focused mainly on PS Vita, but everyone knows that this trend is also applying to home consoles: for instance, every PlayStation 4 title is downloadable via PSN and this wasn’t the case with PlayStation 3. PlayStation 5 might very well do without physical games entirely.

Personally, I don’t see another generation of consoles using physical drives. They are almost a thing of the past for many PC gamers already (my own PC doesn’t even have a drive, other than the HDD of course), and the benefits of digital games are simply too significant to be ignored, as customers of Steam and PSN/PlayStation Plus know already. What do you think? Do you still cling to physical games or are you of the opinion that they’ll be a relic soon?

If PlayStation allows us to use external hard drives that would be useful to reduce the amount of Blue-ray disc so I can install all my games on 5 TB Hard-drive, I mean they should get some advantage from USB ports 3.0 because it’s fast enough to transfer huge number of files.

I will always choose physical over digital, I like to own my content.

So there doing a ms and doing a slow and steady thing with it, If this happens watch me buy a quarter of the games I buy and buy when there only dirt cheap. I’m sorry I don’t understand people buying games digitally at $60, I wouldn’t spend more than $20 to $30 per game digitally, They should be increasing there target audience not decreasing it, I’d like to see the numbers for games that are purchased at full price……, hardly any I bet, People are blind, This is for them to cut costs and make more money, it’s dose not benifit anyone other than people who don’t get of there arse and go or the store, I don’t see having all my games downloaded on my console to be any better, I thought putting a disc in was easy enough, The difference with music and games is that a song can last 2 minutes and you can go through 100 in a couple of hrs where most people have a game selection a of a dozen or so games and each one can be played for 10 hrs thus not needing to go to the next games after the other , it a waste of time and digitally on makes sense if the price is right and maybe if they offer a streaming subscription that is cheaper than physical.

You can do more with physical. I’ll stick to that over digital anyday.

$0N¥ = the biggest deceiver of them all. All lies, overhype and underdeliver and gamer people are just too stupid to fall for it.
