Heroes of the Storm, formerly known as Blizzard All-Stars and Blizzard’s answer to the rise in popularity of the MOBA genre, will be directed by Starcraft 2‘s former lead designer and director, Dustin Bowder. The list doesn’t end here, with many other talented Starcraft developers making the move to the MOBA world with Heroes of the Storm.
Seeing developers with a strong RTS background is reassuring for me, especially since most new MOBAs are too busy trying to emulate League of Legends instead of going back to the genre’s roots, which all begun as a mod for an RTS game. Dota, for example, still has many influences from classic RTS games in its mechanics, hopefully this new Blizzard team will find a right balance between adding challenging and intresting RTS mechanics in an accessible yet compelling MOBA.
The fact that they are calling the characters “heroes” and not “champions” is a good start!
