Nintendo tried Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword HD

With two upcoming Zelda titles releasing within the next couple of months, Nintendo has revealed they tried out high-def versions of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

In an interview with Polygon, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma said, “When we were thinking about the new Zelda for Wii U, which is something we’re actually working on, we needed to experiment with a variety of graphic styles and it was part of that process we took some existing Zelda games and made them HD just to see what would happen.”

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma.

Aonuma continued, “In doing so we realized that the Wind Waker graphic style, the art style, really represented well on the Wii U given the graphic capabilities of the new system. It really brought that world to life.”

Satoru Iwata of Nintendo said something similar when Wind Waker HD was first revealed during the Nintendo Direct from Jan. 23, 2013. Iwata had said with its cartoon style, it’s “the perfect game for introducing first-time players to the Zelda universe.”

As far as HD iterations of Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess coming to fruition, Aonuma said, “I can’t say that the possibility is zero that those will be made into HD, but right now I need to work on the next installation in the series so I don’t have the bandwidth to do that right now, but maybe it will happen if someone else does it.”

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD will set sail to retail on Oct. 4 for the Wii U.
