Wildstar presentation + Q&A at Gamescom 2013

As promised yesterday, here’s our full recording of the Wildstar presentation by Jeremy Gaffney at Gamescom 2013.

The presentation itself touches on some of the main features of the game, beginning with the latest Devspeak video about crowd control and then delves into Wildstar mechanics and the focus on “challenging gameplay” and “elder game content”.

Those of you who have followed the game from the start will likely know all of this stuff by now, however I managed to ask a question that had been puzzling me for quite some time - in a blog post on the official website, Gaffney himself defined Wildstar as a “sandpark” type of MMO, mixing some of the elements typically found in themepark and sandbox MMORPGs. However, it was pretty clear to me that while Wildstar has a few sandbox features, the vast majority of the game still follows the typical formula of a themepark MMO, so I asked him if they were open to introduce more sandbox oriented systems in the future - and the answer was yes, they are.

As a matter of fact, he explained, while the game starts by strongly guiding the player in its first steps, eventually it opens up as player level increases. He also expects that players will be asking for more sandbox later on, but in the end it will be up to them to voice their opinion. So, there you have it - let your ideas be heard by Carbine!
