PS4 price shows Sony's commitment, says Level 5 boss

Speaking with Famitsu, Level 5 CEO CEO Akihiro Hino spoke favorably of Sony‘s stance towards next generation, mainly pointing out PS4 price.

Pricing was the number-one surprise of E3. I think anyone can look at that and think this is cheap! Putting cutting-edge PC specs into a game machine that costs just a few hundred dollars really brings across how serious SCE is about this generation.

If you were on vacation on Mars in the last couple of months, PS4 price has been confirmed at E3 to be 399$/€, while main competitor Microsoft announced Xbox One to be priced at 499 $/€; oddly enough, PS4 hardware is not only cheaper, but also believed to be more powerful, and the size itself of the console is considerably smaller.

It should be noted that Level 5 is a long standing Sony supporter, though, since Dark Cloud debuted on PlayStation 2, and then again with White Knight Chronicles and most recently, Ni No Kuni; some rumors seem to hint that Ni No Kuni 2 could be under development for PlayStation 4, we may hear more about this during the Tokyo Game Show.

The ONLY thing the price shows is that they want to beat there main competitor the X-Box One on price to sell that many more PS4s. It shows there commitment and desire to eventually making a lot money off consumers. There is of course nothing wrong with that, but never think they are doing it for you. They do it for themselves and what they think they can get away with in a free market system. That is how any company makes money.

It’s hilarious how things have (seemingly) flip-flopped from last/current gen to the next gen. The media and gaming community alike have suddenly forgotten/forgiven all of Sony’s failures and transgressions with the PS3…and PSP/PSP-Go…to an almost absurd point. The PS3 was $100-$200 higher than the 360…an entire YEAR after the 360′s launch… had the free-but-inferior online service, horrible 3rd party dev support (leading to horrible ports/versions of games), multiple hardware iterations that saw loss of more features…all prefaced by the ridiculous public comments of their (then) CEO, and other company officials. But that’s all in the past, and so Sony is given a free pass…even though they’ve yet to even release the PS4, or even complete hardware specs and info. Meanwhile, MS is taking it’s lumps, and everyone is already calling them out of the game. They forget that MS has survived miserable failures and product launches in the past. The “RROD” fiasco would have absolutely killed most other companies…not to mention the utter failures of Zune, Kin, and Windows ME and 8 (Vista wasn’t a failure…it was just re-branded as 7).

So no, the PS4 pricetag doesn’t show Sony’s “commitment”; it shows that they are desperate to not fail, out of the gate. They MUST regain some of the market share they lost to MS and Nintendo, and will do whatever it takes to make that happen. If you want to call that commitment, then fine…but don’t turn around and badmouth MS and their “$$” as their only answer to a problem. Whether you’re spending money, or taking a loss to gain money (market share) back in the long-term…it’s all the same in business.
