In an interview with Dengeki Online, Lightning Returns game design director Yuji Abe shared some new details. Apparently, Lightning can explore the world of Nova Chrysalia seamlessly anywhere she can walk. Each continent can be walked through seamlessly, however loading times will still be encountered for warp functions. The world map itself is said to be almost completely explorable, thus making for a quite large game environment.
An interesting and innovative element is that of extinction - by killing the same enemies over and over again, that species can be permanently eliminated. However, Abe warned that the last members standing of a certain species would be particularly strong, following basic Darwinian principles.
Although the first play-through of the game is also the most difficult, Abe confirmed that players could potentially experience everything in that single play-through. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is releasing on November 21 in Japan and in early February in the Western countries for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
