Xbox One has no backwards compatibility

If you’re an Xbox gamer like myself, you may have viewed today’s big Xbox One reveal by Microsoft, secretly hoping you might be able to play your beloved Xbox360 games on the new system.  Sorry to disappoint some, but that won’t be happening.

The new Xbox One reveal came with the sad news that Xbox One has no backwards compatibility with Xbox360 games. The Verge reports Xbox Live VP Mark Whitten confirmed the new console contains different core architecture, which will not support 360 discs, nor will it support Xbox Live Arcade downloadable 360 content.  The Xbox One features an 8-core x86 CPU, which will not support previous Xbox360 games designed for the Xenon processor’s PowerPC architecture.

However, this announcement is not a surprise, as many have speculated this would be the case.

Questions arose on whether Xbox would follow Playstation’s plans to develop a method of cloud streaming older games onto newer consoles.  However, Whitten announced Microsoft has no current plans to develop a similar system.

Microsoft appears to have no plans to rebuild 360 games for the new system, instead announcing deals for new content.  EA Sports announced the return of Madden NFL 25 and exclusive FIFA content.  Activision announced the new Call of Duty: Ghosts, and Remedy Entertainment announced the groundbreaking Quantum Break, which will blend gaming and live-action television experiences.  Perhaps of all the announcements, this last one proves most intriguing.
