The upcoming MMORPG from Mark Jacobs, founder of Mythic Entertainment (known mainly for Dark Age of Camelot), is literally fighting for its existence. Camelot Unchained, that is the placeholder name of the game, has to reach the 2 million dollar threshold in the next 28 hours of its Kickstarter campaign to be founded. Otherwise, even if only a few hundred euros are missing, City State Entertainment will not receive anything at all.
This would mean, according to Jacobs, the cancellation of the game, currently still in its concept phase.
To date, Camelot Unchained’s campaign already collected around 1 million and 820k dollars. The game will focus on RvR (Realm versus Realm, called TriRealm for copyright reasons ), even more than Dark Age of Camelot did back in 2001; Jacobs even went as far as saying that there will be no true PvE activities. Among the other features it’s worth mentioning that Camelot Unchained should be a comeback to good old traditions, avoiding the easy way of recent MMORPGs: no arrows pointing to the objective, no free teleport spells, no abundance of “single-player content” over group content, which will be encouraged instead.
During the campaign, City State Entertainment also demonstrated a prototype system for the creation of buildings. This system was apparently inspired by Minecraft and should enable players, especially those that choose the crafter class, to impact the persistent world in ways that classic theme park MMORPGs like Worlds of Warcraft or Everquest cannot possibly do. The setting is very close to that of Dark Age of Camelot, since the three available realms are none other than the Vikings, the Arthurians and the Túatha Dé Danann, clearly modeled after a race of people from Irish mythology and therefore akin to the faction of Hibernia in Daoc.
Of course, we wish the best to City State Entertainment in their venture.
