Watch Dogs “The Deepest, Not The Biggest, Open World”

Ubisoft‘s Jonathan Morin is still answering questions on Watch Dogs. As the release date draws closer, people want to understand how the game compares to similar open world games, for example in terms of size.

In a video interview with Eurogamer, Morin conceded that Watch Dogs won’t have the biggest world as there are no jets or helicopters, but added that it will be the deepest, as that was the development team’s focus for the game.

We didn’t really pay that much importance to scale. I’ve did open world games before and, that’s my personal take on it, size can be a trap. Like any other mechanics or content in the game, you want to create what you need; you don’t want to do just for the sake of doing it.

Size is something that matters when you need it. A game like GTA V, for example, is a massive world; but they have jets! Jets need space. I think that’s totally a legitimate way of doing it.

In our case, we have a lot of depth, we want to play for twenty minutes in a roadblock. So, we were focusing a lot on that depth and making sure that we wouldn’t have extra space causing problem to that desire. The game is massive and Chicago is massive, but don’t expect, like, the biggest open world ever done. Do expect the deepest one you’ve ever seen, though.

Watch Dogs is now scheduled for release on 27th May for PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4. A WiiU version is still in the works and should launch at a later, albeit unspecified, date.
