RAD: Multiplayer Not The Right Way To Introduce The Order 1886

The embargo on the press event held in London for The Order 1886 has finally been lifted, and we already found a very interesting comment by Ready at Dawn studio head Ru Weerasurya, who expanded in a chat with VG247 on the reasons why the game - which can be labeled as a squad based third person shooter - won’t apparently feature multiplayer.

We discussed [multiplayer] very early on when we first started working on it. The reality of it, though, is that to achieve what we want and deliver the message we aim to deliver, especially with this being a new IP, we always felt like it would be great in multiplayer but that we weren’t sure it was the right way to introduce an IP.

The driving force of this game specifically was to put the IP first. That, and the single-player story has to trump everything else and we didn’t want the team to be split between two things, because it really does take a whole team to do a great single player game and another to do multiplayer

It makes sense, of course, and it’s great that they decided to focus on what they believe to able to do best for The Order 1886. That said, the wording of the final sentence does leave some room for speculation - Weerasurya says that it takes one team to do each part right, could it be that while Ready at Dawn is not working on the multiplayer, another studio has been tasked for the job? It wouldn’t be the first time this happens, for sure - Ubisoft and Crytek started splitting single and multiplayer between many internal studios long time ago. He could have outright said that there won’t be any multiplayer until a potential sequel, but he didn’t.

Alas, we’ll know more at E3 for sure. In the meantime, you can check out a new gameplay footage here.
