SOE All Access Pass Doesn’t Work on PS3/PS4, For Now
Yesterday Sony Online Entertainment (also known as SOE by fans) had a lot of announcements to make, with a mix of good news and bad news. First of all, four underperforming games will be shut down soon: Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures and Free Realms will close on March 31st, while Vanguard and Wizardry Online will close on July 31st.
This was explained by SOE CEO, John Smedley, as an unfortunate but necessary way to refocus the company’s resources where they are most needed. It’s not hard to see where: the company is betting hard on Everquest Next and Planetside 2, which they hope to support for many years to come. The good news is that from April 2nd onwards, there will be a SOE All Access Pass enabling top-tier level membership in pretty much all of the remaining games, including:
- Everquest 1
- Everquest 2
- Planetside 2
- Everquest Next Landmark
- Everquest Next
- DC Universe Online
- Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (until its closure)
All of this for $/€14.99 per month. There are also other membership benefits still to be finalized for games such as Dragon’s Prophet (published by SOE in North America), and the following exclusive discounts and promotions on the store:
- Claim 500 Station Cash monthly from within the game marketplaces.
- Receive a 10% discount on marketplace purchases.
- Gain access to exclusive promotions and offers throughout the year.
At first glance the SOE All Access Pass surely seems a bargain, but one that unfortunately PS3 and PS4 owners won’t be able to use for games such as DC Universe Online and Planetside 2, at least initially.
If you read carefully, the original announcement specifically mentions DC Universe Online PC and Planetside 2 PC, which puzzled me - so I decided to inquire Smedley himself on Twitter, and he kindly confirmed it.
At least, he mentioned that they are still trying to find a way, so there’s hope. I would be surprised if they didn’t manage it, since PS3 & PS4 platform owner is, of course, Sony Computer Entertainment…
