Housemarque: PlayStation 4 Is The Supreme Platform
The highest-rated PlayStation 4 launch exclusive is, a bit surprisingly, not a big budget title. I’m obviously talking about Housemarque‘s Resogun, a game so addictive and charming that it can easily be recommended for purchase (it will leave PS Plus’ Instant Game Collection in just a few days) even to those of you who are not fans of the genre.
Naturally, after such a resounding success everyone wants to know what’s next for the small, but talented independent Finnish developer. Eurogamer talked with Mikael Haveri, Head of Self-Publishing, who approached the topic from a technological standpoint, stressing the untapped power of PlayStation 4:
Talking from the tech standpoint, PlayStation 4 is the supreme platform for us, and a lot of developers. I think of course that the surface has just been scratched, and there’s a lot of opportunity there.
But we’re a tech-centric company, and there are a lot of technological things that we can explore that haven’t been available before. Even stuff on high-end PCs, you have to scrap some of it because you know only 5 per cent of people with PCs can play them. Going to something like the voxel tech in Resogun - you can go very different routes, and now that you know that there are a few million PS4s out there you really know that all these players can enjoy that same level of modern tech so we’re keeping that in mind. We intend to deliver in different ways on the tech that’s out there
He does have a point, in that while high-end PCs are actually more powerful than PlayStation 4, their power cannot be exploited completely unless the developer decided to cut off 90% or so of the potential customers with lower end machines. In terms of fixed platforms, PlayStation 4 is the most powerful of all, as proven constantly by the resolution/frame rate dramas involving multiplatform games.
I can’t wait to see what Housemarque comes up with in their next PlayStation 4 title. Personally, I hope it’s a MMO-ish Dead Nation 2 - fingers crossed.
