Tomb Raider dev: Things have changed at Square Enix
Crystal Dynamics‘ Executive Producer for Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, Scott Amos, released some interesting words to VG247 in an interview published today. After answering a slew of questions on the next gen release (which has been confirmed to run at 30FPS), Amos talked a bit about the little “incident” when Square Enix inadvertently labeled Tomb Raider as a failure in one of its financial reports, reassuring that now the game is profitable:
When it happened it was right around the time of the Game Developers Conference in California. We were all saying ‘it’s getting great reviews and people seem to like the game’. The best news I can give you is we’re definitely in the black at this point so there’s no doubts about profitability or whatever – we’re making a profit on the game so there’s no doubts in my mind where the game is at both critically and commercially – it’s clearly set up for where we’re going right now with the Definitive Edition and where we’re going in the future versions of the franchise.
The Tomb Raider dev then added that things have changed at Square Enix, mostly due to a shift in leadership, and everyone is now backing the Tomb Raider IP.
Regardless of comments; whether it was just the way it was phrased or just commentary on the fiscal year results, at the end of the day, everybody here at Crystal and everybody at Square is behind us with a tent pole game we are relying on for the future. Certainly things have changed at Square with a change of leadership as to who’s running the shop and where things are going. We now have a very solid footing, everybody’s aligned and behind us. If they weren’t we wouldn’t have been given the resources we were to pull off a new version for Xbox One and PS4, let alone the stuff we’re doing elsewhere
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition releases on 28th January for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. You should probably pick it up if you haven’t played it already, as it was one of the best games to release in 2013.
