Universum: War Front - Interview with Cyril Megem

Universum: War Front has a peculiar story to say the least. It’s the labor of love by a single individual, Cyril Megem, who’s been kind enough to take some of his time off the many tasks he handles every day to answer our questions about his sci-fi RTS/RPG/ACTION/MOBA game, currently on its last days of a Kickstarter funding campaign.

First of all, thank you for being with us. Can you briefly tell us about Universum: War Front’s main features?

Thanks for the interesting interview!

Universum: War Front is a game where you can develop your base, grow a strong army, send your troops into the enemy camp, but at any time come down, control your main characters directly and keep the enemy at gunpoint in dynamic battles with realistic physics and beautiful visual effects. See what you character sees!

Let me congratulate on doing all of this by yourself. Storyline, art, programming, sound: that’s something rarely seen these days!

Thank you! More than 10 years of working experience in the gaming industry has helped me to start develop this project alone.

Universum seems an original blend of genres to say the least. Which games inspired you to pursue this route? I can think of Kingdom: Under Fire, which also had action mode/RTS/RPG elements.

I always liked the different genres of games. I liked to keep the enemy at gunpoint in Battlefield series, a large number of different types of military vehicles in Arma, where you can control each of them and of course the most beautiful sci-fi worlds from Warhammer where you can command huge armies. And once I thought: “It will be cool to create my own game project and include to it all the features that I loved in my favorite games!”

Regarding the single-player campaign, will it be linear or can player expect to make some choices along the road? How long will it last?

During the single player campaign I’m going to put the player to choose between good and evil. Now I can’t say how long will be the campaign, because new missions will be added, along with new planets and updates. Of course number of missions will depend on fundraising and suggestions from our players.

In the last video you released we’ve seen some great destructibility. What I’m wondering is how will it factor in the game - is it possible to use it tactically, for example blowing a bridge to prevent enemy troops from crossing over?

Thanks for a good idea about a bridge! I’ll think about it. I used to think that the great destruction will bring only by natural disasters, but now I’m planning that player’s weapons will also be applied to the tactical destructions.

You have listed many planets as stretch goals. Do you still plan to implement them in the game even if you don’t get the relative funding and if so, how much longer will it take?

If this project reaches only current goal It will be the first step to build the game of my dream, I will not stop at this stage, I will find ways to implement all my ambitious ideas. But this Kickstarter campaign will determine how long and difficult will be this way.

I plan to connect my life with this project for a long time. :)

The “Global World” map with MMO elements seems very interesting. However, the description on the KS page is slightly confusing - how many players can participate in this mode? What is the end goal of this mode, and is this meant to be persistent, meaning that results will carry between gameplay sessions?

The best way to understand how it will be implemented - see how it’s implemented in the game Tiberium Alliances.

Think of it as a beautiful and interesting way to implement a menu for selection duel that none menie will affect the global policy and economy of Universum. The number of players is not important in this mode. Much more important is the number of simultaneous matches. As a result of winning or losing in match will be decided who will control a appropriate sector on the global map, which will give the player some bonuses.

By the way, it is too early to talk about it in detail, because the first must be created all planets which will be included in a global map.

Even though your game is clearly aiming at the PC crowd, do you see the possibility for a console release on PS4/Xbox One if you are successful? Also, what do you think of SteamOS and the Steam Controller - do you intend to support them?

Yes, I would be interested to release the game for consoles. But its plans for the future, because now I’m focused on the PC version.
