Team Meat Designer: Steam Controller is a Great Start

If anyone knows how important precision and accuracy is in a game, Tommy Refenes from Team Meat and designer of Super Meat Boy, is that person. After all, he helped create one of the most brutally satisfying platformers of this generation, one where you have to be pixel-perfect in your jumps.

Refenes was invited by Valve to try out their new controller, which was unveiled to the public just a few days ago and, so far, he thinks the controller is a “great start” but not as good as Microsoft’s current 360 controller. Refenes further clarifies his statement by specifying that his preference for the 360 controller may just be due to familiarity and that the Steam controller could pretty much play “any game [Refenes] wanted just fine”.

This is good news for Valve, it shows they are definitely on the right track, however, they still have some work to do. According to Refenes, his biggest complaint was the fact that it’s hard to tell when you are just over a button or pressing it when using the touch-pads. The haptic feedback technology used by Valve helps deal with the problem but doesn’t eliminate it.
