Nintendo Wii Fit U Direct Presentation news break-down
The presentation begins with the Wii Fit Trainer teaching us a new yoga pose, and it’s a rip on Iwata’s now famous “Directly!” stance. Speaking in a sensual voice, it’s easy to take instructions from the Wii Fit Trainer…
Iwata appears and details some new features and game modes. There will be 19 new activities, making a grand total of 77. Not bad! There include bobsledding, dancing and more.
Now we have the Wii Fit Meter. It looks like a normal pedometer, but using a 3-axis accelerometer, the Wii Fit Meter can more accurately measure steps. Also a built-in pressure sensor can detect altitude. How accurate or helpful this will be remains to be seen, but I personally am intrigued. The Wii Fit Meter attaches at the hip, and not the waist, like “most pedometers”, and this decreases measurement error. It looks like Nintendo really want this gadget to be accurate.
A list of things that can displayed on the Wii Fit Meter are:
- Calories Burned
- Steps Taken
- Target Calories
- Elevation difference from home
- Time
- Temperature
- METs (Minutes Exercise Intensity?) Graph
- Elevation Graph
- Graph of Calories burned
All of this can, of course, be transferred to the Wii U system, which shows detailed graphs regarding your weight, calories lost, steps taken and much more. Nintendo really are making this as detailed as possible.
Iwata now shows us the journey one of the Nintendo employees made, everything is detailed on the graph, including the brief minute he ran across a road. Nice. The amount of detail in the graphs is genuinely surprising, and anyone that found the Wii Fit accessory useful on Wii may find this to be a necessity. Everything from climbing up or down, running, jogging, walking, everything you do whilst wearing the Wii Fit Meter is recorded, and using Miiverse, this could be easily shared with friends.
50 days worth of exercise information can be recorded.
As with Wii Fit, the game has many minigames to be enjoyed that can help you burn calories if you don’t meet your goal during the day.
The Wii Fit Meter will be released November 1st.
An interesting piece of news well worth noting is that Nintendo is happily giving away a one-month trial of Wii Fit U. As long as you have a Balance Board at home, you can download Wii Fit U from November 1st and try it out for a month. This is a very nice incentive to try the game before you buy it! This trial contains the full game, with no restrictions, but will only last a month. But here’s another thing: Buy the Wii Fit Meter and your trial of Wii Fit U will unlock permanently. Which is, frankly, fantastic. But Iwata warns that you may need an external device to download the game. Retail copies of Wii Fit U will include the Wii Fit Meter and Balance Board bundled.
Moving away from Wii Fit U, and moving onto Wii Street U. Somewhat related, Wii Street U now has Balance Board functionality! Take steps on the Balance Board to move forward, lean from side to side to turn. This update is available right now.
Finally, an updated version of Wii Sports is finally being released! Wii Sports Club is full HD and has full Wii Motion Plus functionality, with an online multiplayer option for many games! The games all seem to have online leaderboards and rankings, and Wii Sports Club will be available from November 7th.
Each of the original five sports from Wii Sports will be available for purchase separately, and will cost £8.99 (9.99EUR) for permanent ownership, or if you’re only interested, a full day of play will be £1.79 (1.99EUR). But if you don’t want to pay just for a trial, then the good news is that when you first download Wii Sports Club, you will get a nifty 24 hour trial. Nice!
That news again:
- 77 total activities
- Wii Fit Meter is incredibly detailed
- Graphs are incredibly detailed, including altitude and calories burned
- Wii Fit U and Wii Fit Meter will be released November 1st
- One month trial available
- Unlock full game from trial buy purchasing Wii Fit Meter
- Wii Fit U bundles including Wii Fit Meter and Balance Board will be available in December

Nintendo have done well, and perhaps these more “casual” titles will help improve the Wii U’s install base. All Nintendo needs to do is advertise them on TV and in magazines.
