Keiji Inafune’s Mighty No. 9 gets kickstarter campaign

After a less than amicable departure from Capcom, Mega Man co-creator Keiji Inafune and his new team at Comcept no longer hold the rights to his brainchild. This is what inspired him to start a new project known as Mighty No. 9, a spiritual successor to the cherished platforming series. Everything from the character and enemy design, to the overall art style to the gameplay harkens back to the classic series but retains the polish and fresh elements of a contemporary release. In short, this is the Mega Man game that fans have been crying out for and Capcom hasn’t been answering with.

This excerpt was taken from the Mighty No. 9′s Kickstarter page:

“Mighty No. 9 is an all-new Japanese side-scrolling action game that takes the best aspects of the 8- and 16-bit era classics you know and love, and transforms them with modern tech, fresh mechanics, and fan input into something fresh and amazing!

You play as Beck, the 9th in a line of powerful robots, and the only one not infected by a mysterious computer virus that has caused mechanized creatures the world over to go berserk. Run, jump, blast, and transform your way through six stages (or more, via stretch goals) you can tackle in any order you choose, using weapons and abilities stolen from your enemies to take down your fellow Mighty Number robots and confront the final evil that threatens the planet!”

Inafune seems passionate about delivering the “Mega Man” experience that everyone aches for without breaking any copyright laws, so expect robot master style bosses, hard as nails side scrolling and cool and interesting power ups. Now lets just hope a “Mighty No. 9 Legends” game gets released to make up for another well known Capcom snub.

Announcing the exciting news at a PAX Prime panel in Seattle, the team at Comcept wants $900,000 to make the game a reality, hoping to see it release on Steam in early 2015. You can fund the project over at the game’s Kickstarter page and check out Inafune’s teaser video.
