After Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann gave an interview with Playstation blog regarding the return of The Last of Us‘ cast, the interweb misquoted him, inferring that he said it would never happen. He later had to go on the record with Kotaku to set a few things straight. In typical, PR-influenced fashion, Druckmann stated the studio is open to feature the duo in some form or fashion in future titles, but not much else.
That is about as far as we can get before warning of spoilers ahead.
Said Druckmann,
In a spoiler sense, I was referring to the journey with the Fireflies and what they’re after with the cure and all that. We’re not continuing that.
But as far as whether we come back to Joel and Ellie or not, or whether we come back to the world or not, that’s all up in the air. I can tell you there are people in the studio that would love to come back to these characters, but the only way we would do it would be if we had something new, something meaningful to say. Because the last thing we would want to do is repeat ourselves.
‘New’ is definitely the focus at Naughty Dog right now. As far as the upcoming DLC, Druckmann’s commented, “We’re creating [it] from scratch.” You can’t misquote that.
