PS4 VR: Smedley Confirms Sony Doing Oculus Competitor
In the past few months, there have been strong rumors concerning the possible announcement of a PS4 VR solution during CES 2014. However, nothing happened in Las Vegas, but this doesn’t really mean that it’s not coming, just that it wasn’t ready at the time. We just discovered another unexpected confirmation, coming straight from Sony Online Entertainment’s President John Smedley.
Smedley often engages in conversation with fellow fans on the Web (just a few days ago, he confirmed to us via Twitter that the SOE All Access won’t be initially available on PS4), including stopping by the dedicated subreddits of SOE games. A few days ago, in the Everquest Next subreddit a fan asked if they are planning to support alternative VR solutions to the ubiquitous Oculus Rift, to which he answered the following:
hearing good things about 2 competitors.. one of which actually comes from Sony. so I’m thinking this is real and we may have our Snowcrash after all.
The reference to Snowcrash is quite obvious for book readers: Snowcrash is the title of Neal Stephenson‘s cult sci-fi novel, where the legendary writer conceived the Metaverse, a virtual-reality based shared space successor to the Internet. Amongst other things, the book popularized the term “avatar” and inspired many programs such as Google Earth and possibly NASA’s World Wind.
Back on the PS4 VR topic, the speculation is now open as to when Sony Computer Entertainment will choose to unveil their product. E3 seems like a possible venue, and all of a sudden even the otherwise inexplicable delay of Driveclub could make sense, since it has been long speculated to be the first supported title for the device ; maybe both the PS4 VR and Driveclub will launch in early Fall 2014. Still, you have to remind that graphics quality itself might have to be reduced – after all, stereoscopy is still at the basis of 3D and therefore, VR solutions such as the Oculus. Would you be okay to trade immersion for visuals quality? Let us know below.
