Captain Phillips to open the Tokyo Film Festival

The Tokyo International Film Festival (17-25 October 2013) will feature Paul Greengrass’ drama Captain Phillips as the opening film.

The movie with Tom Hanks will tell the true story of the US-flagged cargo MV Maersk Alabama and its captain Richard Phillips, when in 2009 they were boarded by Somali pirates. This was the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in more than two hundred years.

Captain Phillips will open in theaters on November 29 through Sony Japan, and it is also set as the opening of another important film competition: September’s New York Film Festival.
